5April10 - The village of Tredavoe

This delightful village is so close to Newlyn and Penzance and yet so remote. I remember my scout troop leader lived on a farm there. He was called Billy Tippet and he used to refer to the village as 'Dava' or 'Davas', I think. No-one is sure of the meaning of the name. It may mean 'Homestead (Tre) + on (war)' + whatever 'Davo' is or may have been, judging by earlier forms of the name.
There was also the old story of the Dava Bay which sank laden with heavy cake !!

@Tpp...Thats an old one going back to my childhood !! ..... Dava Bay' refered to the rather muddy pond that once
existed in the village,I remember as a youngster free running poultry at Tredavoe after sunday school we would have a walk around there and down to St Golders quarry and up the coombe and perhaps scrump
some apples at Trereife the only local orchard that had Pippins as I remember, we would continue on to the St Just road and home via Castle Hornick and Love Lane of course that was many moons ago.....

Thanks a lot for that amusing anecdote, welb! I love hearing about life back along down in this beautiful part of Cornwall. As a matter of fact, I thought it must be something worth relating with the 'vessel' being sunk by heavy or 'hevva' (Cornish for 'shoal' cake and a celebration for a glut of fish caught I think!) As a matter of fact, I shall next be putting up a few pictures of Tredavoe's green and well which I suppose is where the pond used to be. I'm so pleased that someone's looking at the pics in this folder.
