Gibsons took a picture of this wreck, not this one - I suspect it is a Gibson; Magdeleine, B2684, French Trawler; a crew member had been injured and they had come into harbour to see a doctor; on the way out they struck Bartholemew Ledges.
Picture Penzance has an obligation and a duty to credit, where known, a photographer; not only as a matter of decency, but one of preventing claims of copyright matters.
Well, a name would be nice, but, what the heck, every picture tells a story. even if it cannot be officially acccredited. BTW, what does Official Accreditation bring? Apart from some brassily aquired Kudos I mean, lots of us point and click, does that mean we are masters of the photographic world?? I think not.
Indeed we aren t duffy, but professional photographers have a habit of suing....... hence our terms and conditions are very tight indeed. If we recognise a picture as a commercial publication we should credit it at least.
I recognise and accept this, but is there a problem with giving a name to the original source.
As an example, I am embarking on my second Phd. I am well aware of sourcing and referencing, but I cannot reconcile this vague referencing to certain sources on the PP site. In my opinion, PP should either publish a picture that has been fully accredited to the author or not post it at all.
I am sorry if I seem pedantic here but I would instantly sue anyone who even purported to place any information on any form of public domain without my express permission. I have seen this done too many times.
The reason is simply because we aren t always sure that the pictures are part of a collection or not. The local libraries hold most of the collections for Penzance and neither have copyright over them (no matter what they think). Because of the nature of Picture Penzance it s not always possible to trace back the source. In this case these ships are from my grandfather and great grand fathers collection. My grandfather died 26 years ago and left no notes to where or how he came by these pictures. This is the case in many pictures placed up here on Picture Penzance. Our policy is once it has been formally identified as a commercials picture within copyright we delete the image...... Until then we really don t know if they are or not...... It s a minefield.
