I'm not a boaty type though I love being aboard ferries, the Scillonian included. To date I have never been seasick. The nearest I ever got was on board a 'hydroglisseur' (What is that in English?........mmm, oh yeh! a hydrofoil) between Jersey and St Malo on a day trip on honeymoon. The sea was very choppy on returning, the bow kept slapping the wave tops and jerking upwards. I'd had a big, fat, French hotel meal as part of the day trip and eaten what a lot of staid English folk from oop north offered me untouched off their plates as a young, greedy man. They had resisted the food because it was French and different. I got my pay-back now once on board again bound for St Helier and felt really bilious but, nevertheless, I lasted out fortunately in spite of the different kind of motion from the standard boat! I got on the big Channel ferry for Weymouth almost immediately the same night but didn't suffer from the motion at all.

Not being a sailor, inlike my grandfathers or uncles, merchant and boatbuilders, I have never felt ill at ease or the need to empty myself. Cross Channel Ferry in the teeth of a gale had everyone looking at the rails, but somehow the constitution and sealegs sorted it all out; much the same also from being on the original Scillonian in heavy seas off the Wolf. Chunky lumpy green seas, great stuff, with that wonderful sea mist that hides the horizon from view, giving no reference at all; I must have inherited it from past genes.
