HMS Diamedes

Ashore off Newlyn Date unknown
Should be enough water there for her - Name HMS Diomede, a cruiser. I will check though.

Hmm obviously that is what they thought as well ... HMS Diomede was taken from Falmouth Reserve sold to BISCO 5th April 1946 for breaking up by Arnott Young of Dalmuir. Whilst on passage to the breaker s yard she grounded during tow off Penzance but was refloated. The ship arrived on 13th May 1946 and broken-up later that year.

The idea of a commissioned RN ship accidentally going aground on the doorstep of the fishing fleet - disaster.

Second thoughts - disaster and one of the countries best kept secrets. Good picture hadn’t seen before or been aware of the incident. Thank you.

I would say she was stuck on the reef off what is now the old quarry site. Time and distance prevents me from naming it but I dived it many times only to find discarded trawling gear. Having dived that and Lowlee Ledges extensively in my early and middle/late life, I find this picture absolutely fascinating.
