Penzance 1867

A race of six life - boats at Penzance. Taken from the Illustrated London News (no longer with us) in 1867
Six Lifeboats took part in this race on 10th September of 1867; Sennen Cove were winners, with oars raised, the rest were Penzance, Hayle, St Ives, Mullion and Porthleven; the race was held to mark the opening of the New Public Buildings; four lifeboats were paraded through the town [Richard Lewis (Penzance), Moses (St Ives), Isis (Hayle), Daniel Draper (Mullion)] The Daniel Draper was launched and named as a part of the ceremony, she being brand new. Later the race was joined by Cousins William and Mary Ann of Bideford (Sennen) and Agar Robartes (Porthleven). On that same day, to close the celebration, the lifeboat house on the end of The Promenade was opened.
Reported in ILN 21st September 1867.
