Here we are ... Othon Stathatos 3,524 tons. Fog wrapped Othon Stathatos, Greek collier (or Ithica), she had struck the Three Stones Oar April 1913. Entered St Ives Bay bows fully awash.
Othon Stathatos
Built 1888, Readhead, South Shields
1,800 tons; 85.5 x 11.3 m;
From 1899 she became the Quinto.
eventually sunk Lido di Ostia 19th February 1917.
[Redheads also built the Hain ships].
Hmm? A curious dichotomy? It looks as if there is a different ship with a similar name, not in the records? Needs looking into. I have Redhead's records, as well as WWI losses...... Checked and .....
Definitely sunk 1917 as the Quinto, her particulars all agree with the spec given by Redhead for the Othon Stathatos.
Othon Stathatos, Redhead
270 x 36.75 x 18.75 feet; triple expansion 200 nhp engines by Redhead; 160 psi steel boilers;
third vessel built for Stathatos Bros of Braila Galatz Sulina, named by Mrs Eftichia Hanos of Ithaca
So how she came to be in St Ives Bay under that name (Othon Stathatos was the name of the head of the family) in 1913, begs some questions.
The picture shows the bow inscription may not read 'Othon Stathatos'? Any chance of a Hi Res scan of her name? Maybe the family bought a later replacement not recorded?
High Court cases handled, it appears owners of Othon Stathatos were in some conflict with the owners of Almerian 1919, Venus 1918, and of Norfolk Coast, 1923. Has to be a larger vessel from 1899? These pictures then are a mystery.
