Sterling stuff.

A distant relative, no longer with us, had salvage from this wreck built into his home or so he claimed.

SS Liberty; 17th January 1952 Pendeen; 5,250 grt; 399 x 52.2 feet.
Built Palmers of Hebburn on Tyne 1918, as War Camel, but completed March 1919, as Cairndhu [Cairns Line, Dundee];

1952 Scrapped in location.
She had already been stranded in Stockholm in 1951, when operating Baltic iron ore work.

1952, she left Newport in ballast 16th January 1952; heading for La Goulette. She then was hit the next day by a NW gale and violent snow, her steam dropped, and her age could not muster what was necessary. She spread broadside under the cliffs; 22 men (including the captain) took to the breeches buoy offered and escaped to safety, but 13 others remained on board terrified by it all, but were eventually rescued at 6.30 am. Liberty had received severe damage, including a fire that had broken out, and so she was scrappped.

Went down with parents to see this vessel the next day, the Skipper was standing on the cliff top, devastated,
