Horsa - full rig iron sailing ship; 1,128 tons
Built by Scotts, Greenock 1860
Homeward bound for Liverpool from Bluff, New Zealand with tinned meat, wool and grain.
She took St Martin's too closely in a easterly gale, and was taken into Bread and Cheese Cove, scraping her hull, and tearing holes in her plating.
Packet Steamer Lyonesse came in attendance; Captain Rolson's wife, child and nurse taken off on the St Mary's lifeboat; the steamer managed to get hawsers and tow the ship off, despite breaking three ropes. The captain decided to get the vessel into St Mary's and asked the Lyonesse to stand by, in hindsight it was fortunate that they did, as the ship pulled away from the Cove, she heeled over, sinking finally 21 miles SW of Bishop Rock 4th April 1893, the entire crew being rescued by the Lyonesse.
