The outside of Smeaton's pier; note the reinforcement layer, which was added when the extension was built in 1890. Consideration had to be given to the fact that there was a join, and that the join was an internal vee, which would concentrate the force of the sea. Note the early form of wave deflector that Smeaton had devised. That detail can be seen on another part of St Ives, and so had to have been of Smeaton's design also.
