Had a quick look on Ships nostalgia, and cannot find any L1 ,I hope someone can find some information as i am intrigued. Nice set of photos by the way, thank you.
Yes it is a strange one... I'll take another look at the original and see if there are any more clues.
Thanks... I've actually got a few thousand pictures to go through yet.
Just found this on Google. On the 29th March 1930,the Submarine L1 came adrift from her tow and drifted onto the rocks near Porth Navren. The submarine a veteran of the 1st World War had been launched by Vickers at Barrow in 1917 and at the time of her stranding, was on tow to the breakers, It was not worth refloating the submarine so she was scrapped where she lay.
I use that list a lot ... I have been sent some excellent pictures, but when I discover they are on that list, I politely move on. Thing (for me) is that they still sell prints of them.
Yes it's a pity that they didn't have thumb's as well... would be easier to establish if any of these are Gibson or not. It's fair to say that others were likely to photograph these ships and wrecks as well.
I'll try an contact Sandra and see if she has some other way to cross reference them.
Wikipedia hasa a little more informationon HMS L1,She was built as a L Class submarine by Vickers at Barrow.Originally laid down as E-Class submarine E57 on 18th May 1916,she and sister ship E58 incorporated enough changes that they were renamed as the first pair of boats of a newly designated L class.L1 was launched on May 10th 1917 and commissioned on 10th November 1917.She sailed to Hong Kong in 1919. L1 was placed in the reserve flotilla in 1923 in Hong Kong. She was sold in March 1930 and scapped in Newport. Obviously the part about Newport is incorrect, or is it?
