The Ill-Fated HMS A1
In this rare photograph, the Royal Navy’s first commissioned submarine, HMS A1, is seen alongside another vessel — possibly a tender or sister craft. Launched in 1902 and commissioned in 1903, A1 was the first British submarine built for operational service, marking the start of the Royal Navy’s undersea fleet.
Dubbed “ill-fated” after her tragic collision with HMS Hibernia on 17 March 1904, the submarine sank in the Solent, taking 14 of her crew with her. She was later raised, repaired, and returned to service, continuing experimental and training duties until her final decommissioning in 1920.
This photograph captures a vessel that represents both innovation and early peril in submarine warfare, showing the small but deadly undersea craft that would come to play a vital role in the Royal Navy.
