Storm and Tragedy off Godrevy: The Wreck of SS Nile – November 1854

On the 30th of November 1854, the iron‑hulled steamer SS Nile met a tragic end on the notorious Stones reef off Godrevy Head in Cornwall, after striking the submerged hazard during a severe storm. Built in 1850 by Alexander Denny in Dumbarton, the Nile was an iron screw steamship of about 525 tons, operated on coastal routes between Liverpool, Dublin and London, carrying both cargo and a small number of passengers.

On her final voyage she was bound from Liverpool to London, due to call at ports including Penzance, Falmouth and Plymouth, laden with heavy merchandise. Battling rough seas and high winds in late autumn weather, the Nile was last seen near the Longships Lighthouse before disaster struck.

The vessel appears to have drifted off course in the darkness and battering storm, colliding with the dangerous Stones reef — a long‑feared hazard to shipping in St Ives Bay. Within hours she sank, and all aboard were lost, including crew and passengers; floating wreckage, oil slick and the remains of some victims later washed ashore at nearby beaches.

The loss of the Nile, with all hands, was one of the most tragic maritime disasters off the Cornwall coast in the mid‑19th century and highlighted the perilous nature of this stretch of sea. Outrage and sorrow at the disaster helped spur renewed calls for better navigational aids. In response, the Godrevy Lighthouse was constructed on Godrevy Island and first lit in 1859, to warn mariners away from the treacherous reef that had claimed the Nile.

Seen through period engravings and later historical illustrations, the wreck of the Nile stands as a stark reminder of the dangers of early steam navigation — and the human cost that often preceded improvements in maritime safety.
