During 1940, the people of Penzance showed remarkable community spirit by raising funds to contribute to the national Spitfire Fund. The town aimed to raise £5,000 to sponsor a Spitfire fighter plane, hoped to be in the air within three months to defend Britain from enemy bombers.

Subscriptions of all sizes poured in from banks, local businesses, schools, clubs, and individuals. Contributions came from groups such as the Penzance Inner Wheel, local schoolchildren, the British Legion, and a variety of local hotels, shops, and households. Even modest donations, collected in small boxes around town, added up impressively.

By mid-1940, over £2,000 had already been raised, reflecting both the generosity of the community and the urgency of the war effort. Local newspapers regularly acknowledged contributions, encouraging everyone to “give all you can” and organise fundraising events. The appeal stressed that while small amounts might seem insignificant, collectively they could make a critical difference: Spitfires in the air could save lives far more effectively than anything else.

The campaign highlighted Penzance’s unity and determination during the war, demonstrating that every citizen, from children in school to patrons of local clubs and businesses, could contribute to the defence of the nation.

£98,031.69 is what cost £2,000.00 in 1940 would cost £98,031.69 in December 2025.
