To the left, the War Memorial, set in the ancient blockhouse surround wall; there are two ornithologists exploring the wildlife to be seen here, and which depend upon these rocks and beach; then, backing the Parade Ground, is the old wall of the wharves, long before Batten's Wharf. The next wall is later and was finished around 1923, although the inner face is around 1839. The next stage to the right shows the lower stonework of the Pier, and above it the vertical extension, somewhat like the Pier construction on Smeaton's Pier at St Ives.
