Built 1818 between Copperhouse Pool (built 1788) and Wilson's Pool; apparently at the time Reverend Hockin kept his punt in the upper end of what became Wilson's Pool, at the Rectory Quay. So, to allow him to pass at high water, one of the arches is higher than the other. When the pool was emptied at lower tides, the rush of water swept the silted beds of the harbour free, allowing deep draught vessels to enter port. The roadway was built to access Riviere and the quays.
