Bridge House, Hayle

4th April 2009
Built in 1790 for the Arundell family; it was a Count House for the collection of rents and leases.
Later used as the Police Station and Jail.
Police (Peelers or Bobbies) did not exist before 1829, when Sir Robert Peel introduced Britain to a police force. Jails certainly did and the town officer took care of that duty for the mayor, before the advent of police. County police came into being around 1850 and later.
Do you remember about 20 - 25 years ago the whole bottom section of the frontage was taken away, propped up, and rebuilt?
