This arch is a part of the work that Henry Harvey designed for himself on The Plantation, formerly Carnsew Point. The arch dates from 1844 and is a brilliant example of the skill of the artisans. The geometry and construction of the centreing of timber that had first to be made, the cutting of stonework and the bricklaying are quite extraordinary. Here is a curve which passes through a wall which is set at an angle to the plane of the curve. This took complete understanding from designer through to the work itself. Understanding and skill of designer and workman in tandem, not something which is that apparent in present day buildings.
