Chirgwins 1925

Chirgwins, established 1737; Nr 7 and 8, Market Place; with Nr 6 being taken in and the front extended c1905, the shop front being altered to the new rage of Art Nouveau. There is a building line plan of 1948 (I have the plan) where any new work is to be set back on that line, losing floor space of the property. All of the buildings on South and West Market Place are at risk, if they are not maintained. Photo 1925. Does the town want more Pearl Assurance, Branwell House and Penlowarths?
We have already lost one of Oliver Caldwell s when Hepworths came to town, before the building line (Blight Line, as it was nicknamed). Hepworths was our first chain store. Market Square will be a vast open characterless space if this continues. I like the intimacy that history has given us in Market Square.

What a fantastic building - especially the glass work. PZ today now seems a shadow of her former self, which is a real shame.

Unique to this town, because it is one of Oliver Caldwell s fave rave details. Take a look bottom of The Terrace, look at Nat West Bank (as it is now named).
