Marine Terrace looked different in the 1890s The railings are not there today as they would have been removed during World War 2 to help make guns and weapons. This was a common practice and many buildings still havent had their railings replaced.
That was another governmental farce. All the wonderful railings and gates hacked off and bundled into ships. Unfortunately someone in high office had not quite got hold of the fact that cast iron cannot be turned into anything - least of all gunmetal; and so it all had to be dumped; my father said there is a cast-iron mountain out in the Bay somewhere. Maybe a diver could qualify that? But it was a great bungle representative of ill considered plans.
