Various fund raising exercises and appeals for donations met the cost of materials and the gym was built using volunteer labour. A stage at one end, with changing rooms underneath, meant that the building could also double as a theatre.
The single high window gave onto the stage. The 3 low windows are where the showers were and we gained access to the hall from the changing room, up some steps and through a very low doorway that went through the apron of the stage. There were also steps that led up the opposite corner from the showers past Bob Horne's 'office' and onto the stage. As I remember it, the area I refer to as the 'office' was just a landing at the top of the stairs with javelins etc against the wall and a sort of platform which served as a chest-high table perched on the bannister you went around as you reached the top of the staircase. I remember this table being littered with stuff like books, whistles and a starting pistol!
