Although I'm not old enough to remember steam engines in a daily life, I'm always delighted to see these fascinating machines. I think it's the ultimate tinkering machine.
I can remember machines like this being in common use on roadworks; the wheels were spread with water, and there were great spikes at the rear, called scarifiers, to dig up the old surface, much more efficient than present day pneumatics.
