Before we moved up to Paul we lived in neighbouring Belgravia Street, milliemoo lived in St. James Street (pictured). We noticed that there was a period of about six weeks or so that you could park on both single and double lines before there was a 'hit' on all of the streets in the area. To be fair the local wardens at the time would knock a door of a car they recognised as to belonging to someone living in the street. With the onset of the new 'marshalls' or whatever they call themselves there was no tolerance what so ever.
It beggers belief the number of bank/retail workers patrol these little streets around 8.00am looking for spaces and we would watch them go up and down as much as a dozen times instead of using a car park. I understand that they are as much entitled to park in the street as residents if they have paid there road tax, on some occasions they would (and these were people we recognised that worked in town) became abusive and aggressive. A lot of people in Belgravia Street looked out for each other and if noticing a space would knock a door of someone parked on the lines or if they were about to vacate a legal space with their own vehicle. On one occasion an irate bank worker nearly hit me as I guided a neighbour as he reversed into the space. He was intent on grabbing it first at any cost. Our neighbour made it clear he was not moving as he tried to inch his way in. Eventually the bank worker realised he was on to a loser and drove off. I have been sworn at (including ladies) on similar occasions.
Get the same trouble in Caldwells Road. We've got Churchgoers to contend with on Sundays too. The secret is to take up two spaces and then a neighbour can get you on a mobile to move so they can squeeze in
In my trips down to Penzance over recent years I have always been absolutely shocked at the cars parked along the streets. Nose to tail and sometimes both sides. Taroveor Road and Caldwells Road would appear to be the worst because they are narrow. Where I live we are allowed on street parking for 1 hour only in the City with a parking voucher clearly displayed. Vouchers cost $1.75 each or about GBP1. When the hour is up you have to move and find another space or you will receive a ticket and a fine of $50. You are also not allowed to park facing the opposite way to the traffic flow.
