Situated on top of the hedge beside the A30 midway between Crowlas and Cockwells. The prolific bramble growth completely obscures the base stone, which is inscribed Tregender Manor .
I will dig though what I have here. How old would you say the cross is, and how old is the inscription - you know, give or take a couple of hundred years; the dates can t be coincident; is this cross in Blight or others?
According to Andrew Langdon, the cross was first recorded close to its present position in 1896, and moved onto the current base stone in the early 1920s.
This is all very odd and fascinating, as the family per se closed in around 1600 as their were no male heirs. The property name continued. The other curiosity is that I found a reference to a Tregender Manor in a story of WWII on the BBC website. I have assembled the older family from 1450 to 1600 from Lysons, Vivian and Boase, but they are clear that the line faded. Norden makes no reference to them in 1597, nor the property. I will see what else I have here, though.
