Mazey 2007

Dalek invasion of Causewayhead.
 Wow is this an original dalek? If so it will have fifty six hemispheres. Hemispheres have been aDalek feature from the very beginning and they were originally blue, but were very rarely seen as these episodes were made in black and white. A very rare prop and worth a lot of money if it is original.

This is the original 1960 design, as far as I can make out - I have heard there are about five of these left.

In 1979 when Tom Baker was Dr Who, four Daleks were needed for the Dr. Who story Destiny of the Daleks ‚ The BBC had no budget to build new Daleks and had to use three old 1960s Daleks along with four Dalek props made in 1973 that did not move. One original Dalek was used to make moulds for more Dalek parts. Two of the four props had deteriated so much they were useless. Ihe BBC therefore only had two 1960s Daleks, one prop and the top half of another in useable condition. They used the latter with bitsof the prop to make the blue king or Supreme Dalek which ended up in Madamme Tussauds. That Dalek was sold on for charity for £10,000. At the last count there were only 2 original Daleks left.

These were brill!! and if I remember rightly they squirted water at passers by as they trundled through the streets.....

How very knowledgable of you. It strikes me that a piece of TV and social history should be better cared for and in greater numbers. I know a lot of amateurs make models (some full size); I wonder just what the history of this one is; I wonder if my son would know. He wrote for the BBC Dr Who. I will ask him when I see him next week.

I have a book Dimensions in Time ad Space (Mark Campbell) which lists every episode/film of Dr Who. Dates of original transmissions, actors, actresses factoids, availibity etc. Unfortunately there are a lot of missing episodes destroyed by the BBC as it was not deemed neccessary to archive them. Original Daleks when used are easy to track through the episodes of Dr Who due to the unique paterning of their hemispheres. If you pm me your sons name treeve with a rough year he was writing.I will look him up in my many books/videos etc. To think we have a relative who has worked with the one and only Terry Nation. on PPz. Fantastic.

The ‘oddball’ blue Dalek, as it’s often referred to, was used as the Dalek Supreme in ‘Planet of the Daleks’ and was later blown up, modified and re-made until it ended up at the Doctor Who exhibition in Blackpool and Tussauds, along with a waxwork of Tom Baker. Last time auctioned it sold for £30,000.
