Porthia

I suppose people know that Porthia is the Cornish name for St Ives. Was your grandad from St Ives or his father before him perhaps in that the name was known thus?

Pass, he had a farm at Newbridge as well but I haven t got the tree for his side of the family.

Here it is Porthia Trewithan Road, taken probably in the mid thirties, my dad died in 1944, I was four and brother was nine.

@ S. This view has not changed very much. The verandah looks as it does now. I wonder how big (if even planted) the holly tree was then. Saw it on Saturday, full of berries already.

@ thought of you when I put this one up, the house must have been in the family for over 70yrs before ot was sold. I can remember the interior like yesterday, like something out of a Victorian history museum, complete with servants quarters, stairs, kitchen, and rooms downstairs etc.

Amherst was much the same when we moved in in 1963. Bell pulls etc still in place but sadly not working.

I remember as a lad, it had the same, but they worked (late 40 s early 50 s) also it still had gas lights etc. I can remember the electric being put in in the 50 s, the electrician was a family friend and worked for the electricity board, he was Russell Pengelly.

Yes we still had working gas lights in the bedroom, dad had them taken out around 68/69. There was also a gas fired cauldron in the cellar and a huge iron wine rack that was empty except for a few empty bottles left there for posterity I suppose. When we moved in there were the remains of a greenhouse in the back garden complete with watering and coal fired systems. How the memories flood back.

Oh happy days. I see comparing your picture to tt13 s that the new people living there recycled the trellis which originally was placed behind your mum and dad.
