On visiting Lanhydrock House, the once-home of the Robartes family, near Bodmin yesterday, I took the opportunity of photographing without flash (NT policy permits this from this year, I was told) the small picture of Dolly Pentreath that you see here. Recently, treeve carried out an interesting, fairly in-depth research on Dolly Pentreath's life as a fish jouster (salewoman) and her burial place in Paul churchtown. This fine little painting also has a small plaque under it that ascribes it to no artist but states that Dolly, 1685-1777, was the last speaker of the Cornish language (somewhat erroneously since there were one or two authenticated speakers after her and before the language revival). Does anyone know who the artist was?
