This old warehouse building alongside the Dolphin pub is one of the few older original buildings in this area, others having made way for St Anthony's Gardens and the Jubilee Bathing Pool. I have read that even with there being one 'abroad' in Plymouth, the name may originate from the Cornish 'Barr byghan' or 'Little Tribunal' or Little Judge's Seat' but that may be a load of nonsense. However, Judge Jefferies, is said to have presided over a legal case or two in the Dolphin next door before it was an inn.
