Jennings street and New Street, two of the oldest streets in Penzance. Jennings Street (I have forgotten its old name, for the moment) and Albert Street (old name Neddy Betty s Lane) were the only two routes to the harbour area at one time. The both ended in slips to the water.
I recall reading the name Street-an-Dudden in some old book now. It may well have been a corruption of Stret an Donn: dudden from tonn (masc.)= ley-land, turf but this would tend to make it tudden . If however, it comes from tonn (fem.) = wave then dudden would be more likely (T mutates to D in this case because of its gender). Therefore this might mean Street of the Turf/leyland but Street of the Wave is more logical grammatically. There s a thought!
