The pleasant lounge of the King's Arms, Paul

In September, 1936, His Serene Highness, the Russian Prince Felix Youssoupoff stayed here. He was the principal assassin in 1916 of the mad monk, Rasputin! He and Princess Irina and her brother had been touring and had been asked to pick up a friend's dog from the King's Arms. They came for lunch and stayed a week, phoning Windsor Castle and Paris every night!
I didn't know that - what an interesting piece of local history! Thanks for that, tpp!

Thank Jim Hosking, local historian, and his book about 'People and Places in Paul Parish'. By the way, I have learned from him more about the 'Ring and Thimble' monuments outside Gwavas by the turn off to Paul, and from a local book on Mousehole and Newlyn, launched only on Saturday. It seems an eccentric, John Price, created these follies, the first because a golden ring was found near there in 1781, and is now in some museum, and secondly, the 'thimble' represents a sugar lump because he was an owner of a sugar plantation and slaves in Jamaica. Now's the time to look back at the my pic of such and see what Treeve had to say.

Very interesting tpp. I see you have named it the pleasant lounge. Is that down to the fact that missp and myself frequent there? I must add that the new landlady has made it very pleasant and the 'Tribute' is superb.
