Albert Buildings

Albert Buildings [bottom of Bull's Lane(Taroveor Road)/top of Adelaide Street]. Built by Perkins, Caldwell and Caldwell c1885. Detailing is the same as for Albert Terrace, except the Lion Head motif was not used. There used to be Nigh's Store in Nr1, a grocer on the corner Nr 2and3; Nr 4 was a Riding Tack shop, with a leatherworker (saddler) that was so very talented. Nr 5 was a household store; Nr 6 is a hair salon now. In 1878 there were small cottages and a large greenhouse on this site.
I remember Nighs, always bought my sweets there as my grandmother lived in Adelaide Street (incidentally I was born in Adelaide Street). The greengrocer on this block I seem to remember was called Rowe?

A popular Penzance hairdresser around the forties was Mr. Kenny Richards, who had a barbershop at number five. Like many at the time Ken was a champion smoker and pursued the habit while working. Boys would leave his premises sporting a compulsory ‘short back and sides’ with a precision-combed parting and a Jimpy at the crown, all plastered down with tap water and cigarette ash.

Not sure if it was Harry Rowe dingdong just remember it as Rowes the greengrocer. Nigh's was the shop I used most I remember Mr. Nigh being a rather rotund man with a limp, not sure if he didn't have a prosthetic leg?

@ Tropicgal. Probably not.Harry Rowe also used to go around with a van. From what I can remember he always wore a 'tam' and unfortunately had poor eyesight and used very thick specs.
