Methodist Chapel Alexandra Road

Methodist New Connexion Chapel, built 1903 to the designs of James Firth. Now tastefully and expertly converted into flats. It was described as being undistinguished, but I feel it deserves a better comment on its massing and statement of the new Methodist movement, together with the aspiring tower; it is traditional and yet has the power of the new.
The agreement to build Alexandra Road Methodist New Connexion Chapel, Penzance
was signed 4th December 1901,
by the builder Edward Pidwell, of 4, Penare Terrace
and the Reverend Matthew May
and John Andrew, Secretary of The Trustees
and Edwin Nankervis, Treasurer of The Trustees.
The cost was to be £2,292 and 10 shillings.

Edward Pidwell was the developer of Greenbank Terrace houses.

I will add notes on him to the pictures of that terrace, when uploaded.

We tend to think of the x being used as a part of modern spelling - but there are a number of occasions where it was used at that time. It was an injection of a new order into Methodism from a new society in the North ... the architect was also from Oldham.
