Chyandour Brook

The brook as it exits from under the road and Chyandour. The original area was one deep sandy cove, with a road bridge, roughly where the horse trough now is sited. The bridge was arched with side walls. It was a double bridge, with an island in the centre of the cove. The square is comparatively modern. There were houses on the place where the railway line now runs, as the cliff was cut back to allow for the railway.
I think the powers that be are trying to prevent a child going up there (which is something we used to do). If only the same attitudes were applied to other less desirable risks to young and adult health. In the bottom of the flow can be seen the original river bed at this point. I am unsure as to the reasons for the shingle.

When designing structures years ago, we had to apply a factor of safety, depending upon the material; it is now such an exact science that such factors are unnecessary ... but I guess this is designed to take into account the invasion of at least three superheroes, with a major armoury. ::15:

You use the magic words Open Sesame (alternatively, scream for help). As far as I am aware, there is a similar grille above in the grounds of the Coal Yards that have long gone, before it reaches the top wall of the square.

Personally, I try not to get into rivers at full flood, but if I was to get swept into one, I would rather take my chances with the flow of water than to have to fight this type of thing, as a person would be suddenly hit by this steel barrage, and then forced under water by the flow, and then trapped in a mass of debris that has swept off the outlying land. Nature has her own Rules.
