Left a bit, down a bit ... Fire!!
Piledriver at the bottom of Jennings Street, bottom edge of the site was originally the lower edge of the Cliff of Penzance, to the left of the picture were orchards, later the site to the far left was filled with the Gas Works and the Wharf Road built. Over the roofs can be seen Naples. Quite a view from Penzance?
That, I am ashamed to say, is not yet something that I have seen; I will try and find out, but these steel piles are being driven down 40 feet or more, indicating a fairly high rise building is anticipated. This also indicates the geology of the cliffs themselves, the piles are going down like a hot knife in butter. There is precious little history left in this ancient lane.
