Hugh Town with Buzza Tower; 1965; from the pier; starting left ...
Carn Thomas, Mincarlo (a Thompson house), the Church, high on the hill, Buzza Tower, and below it the bungalows I designed for Geoffrey Drewitt (built by Venn Brothers).
Takes me back a bit. Possible boat names are from the left Father Matt’s sailing boat “Kathleen” , next Young Matt or Ron Watts fishing boat ? The three white ones are more than likely Thompsons. They had I think four at that time Father Jeff’s “Nemo”, Dave’s “Springfield”, Peter’s “Vanguard” and Jeff’s brother Frank ran the “Surprise”
Reliable workhorses, as I remember there were no new boats at that time some went back quite a long way and had varied histories. The Nemo for example had been at Dunkirk.
From my time spent on I.O.S. 1964 and 1965 I’m afraid the Golden Lily along with many others has gone into the memory fog. Some more boats that do come to mind are the Lily of Laguna and Sea King run by Lloyd and G Hicks. The Steamship co. Tean, Gugh, Gondolier and I think Sapphire ?. The Buccaneer run by Guthrie and Cyril. A large yellow vessel known to everyone as “The Banana Boat”. The Atlantic Hotel ran its own new one called the Blue Haze. There was also one run by the Badcock brothers which might have been called Britannia, I can’t be sure of the boat name however their dog Yogi was a character in his own right. When the Summer season came to an end and the boats were pulled up this old hound dog would get bored with looking at the same old faces or whatever and take himself off alone to the mainland for a break. Nobody knows where he went on these forays but after a week or so he would turn up on Penzance quay and get the next return crossing.
Sorry, memory blip - Golden Spray was Lew s boat - did Lew take out Lily of Laguna and Black Swan as well? Animals can be so very intelligent. There were a group of pigeons that regularly commuted on underground trains .. to save flying.
Yes, just checked ... Lewellyn Hitchens originally ran the Golden Spray for the IoSSCo, then bought Black Swan in 1968 or so. He retired 1980 and moved to the mainland, ended here in Penzance running a guest house on Regent Terrace.
