Market Jew Street, Penzance c1875

Kindly provided by Malcolm McCarthy
Upper Market Jew Street c1875
from a glass plate steroscopic pair.
The symbiosis of man and horse was the underpinning of society.
It did not rely on some commercial whim in a far off land or bank.
A very long lasting name on that corner - I believe you spent a long time on another corner near there? ::15: ::6:

A beauty. No one rushing, just people moving on at their own pace. I wonder if the word stress had been invented then?

I think the mood is summed up in the grain cart, being taken up the hill. The horse knows where it is going, and knows the best route for itself; the horse knows and trusts its owner, as it will be fed after the work, and watered during the work; the cartman trusts his horse, in the same manner, just a few paces behind, just in case a carriage or cart comes in the opposite direction, to assist in decision making for the both of them. Respect and Trust. The motor car and lorry comes at a price, as do all of civilisations choices and advances - the question is does anyone actually think out the overall eventual consequences?

A very fine picture of our main street in a bygone age! Thanks to Malcolm McCarthy via Treeve.
