Royal Cinema St Ives - 1977

For years I thought art deco referred to buildings only... but art deco is much more than buildings alone. What I love about the style is the incredible styles and curves.... oh those sexy curves

When I get a chance, I will get those plans out and see if they give any clues. To be purist, the term art deco , unlike the separate art nouveau was a term devised by later generations to describe the form of modern art in vogue in those years. It was the new rounding the corners , a geometric form that was the thing, in lieu of forms based upon growth and nature.

And something defiantly, perhaps but definitely missing from today s buildings sad#

oh, you mean, like good design and character ... no, the Planners don t like that sort of thing, and architects now have no idea just how to do that, anyway. It s either Boresville mediocre, or a half ar***d excuse of a zanussi building dropped in a town with no regard for the vernacular or for decency and respect for the people of the town. Grumpy Old man ... you betcha!!

Would you believe I have never been inside this St Ives cinema in my 50 odd years of living in Penzance!

When it was a real cinema, I used to take one or two trips to St Ives; in common with all cinemas at the time, there were two changes of programme, as well as the Saturday shows; so I went to Camborne, Redruth, St Ives and to the four cinemas in Penzance/Newlyn. They have all lost it now. St Ives had another cinema as well, I forget the name offhand, also went there.
