On The Island at St Ives, on the site of earlier forts from 15th century, these gun emplacements were built; Palmerston forts were built over the period 1890-1910, which fits in with the partial demolition of the chapel of St Nicholas. A massive gun and carriage was pivoted about the central column, the carriage length was near the diameter of the pit; munitions were kept in two side stores, after being brought from the blockhouse.
