Reactionary Architecture

Did you find this out today?.....how interesting...

After seeing Harvey69 s posting, I became interested and went down there this evening (well, last night, now) and set up the camera, and they came over to speak to me. They (as I was) were disappointed at the scaffolding for the works above. I will be taking more pictures later, now I know roughly how it works. They did admit to being the architects for the Newlyn gallery (and I voiced my opinions on that), they also are working on a scheme for the Victoria and Albert in London.

I m glad you had your say regarding the Newlyn extension. Many a time I have stood within hailing distance of the architect of the Penzance bus shelter and very nearly told him what I and everyone else thinks of it.

I have seen better bus shelters ... the extension defies all matters of architectural design, it is an affront to the vernacular, it is an affront to the whole concept of the original reason for the building (innovation is one thing, blatant disregard for sensitivity and principle is quite another); I suggested that three oaks were planted in front of it as eventually it would be hidden from view. It transpires that one of the ecomomies made locally was to the effect that planting and shrubberies were omitted - that is the reason for its present starkness .. blowing a raspberry at Newlyn on all fronts.

Well, I won t be gracing the new extension with my presence, it s quite appalling.

I thought it was an office laugh# laugh# laugh# laugh# No really... we ve all gone arty mad..... wasn t it charity shops in the 80 s.... then estate agents in the 90 s and now every shop seems to be turning into a gallery... wouldn t mind if they could create something a little more sophisticated than what I would expect from a four year old German Sheppard with one paw and the intellect of a deceased jelly fish..... Still that s my humble opinion. Give me a real artist PLEASE

That was my criticism of the building - that there was no identification externally of precisely, or even loosely of its purpose. The reply was but don t you find that intriguing and make you want to go in and find out? - well no, it may be private, or an office I replied. I had no idea that it was an art gallery until harvey69 put his picture up here. My other criticism was the very poor detailing on the corner of New Street, where anyone could seriously damage their head. That was the result of local economies, apparently, as there was intended to be a feature there to make it better as far as aesthetics and safety were concerned. I did also underline my feelings on so called art, I do not consider a bag of nuts or a pile of bricks, let alone a cow cut in half to be art. That is objet trouve, not art. Art is a created object that has no direct or intended function, and evokes feelings or is a representation of another object or scene. That requires talent and emotions beyond a degree of pure observation of physical properties. That is art ... not all the tosh that is to be seen in art galleries or fine art galleries.
