- joking apart, the burn is about four or five times brighter than a camera flash ... the sun is a million or more times brighter than a flash; I was twenty feet away, to get the flat perspective. Too close and depth of field takes over. Not to mention the chance of temporary retina disturbance, or even actual damage, which is what would happen to the welder without the eye screen.
