With break rocks left there after the previous repairs. In the foreground, these rocks, together with much of the Battery Rocks would have been originally covered in a green sward, upon which was built the original Chapel, and from which we derive our Pen Sans; on or around the large rock would have been the original Barbican; this beach was traditionally a landing point for cargo, often it was dropped into the sea to be retrieved at low tide. The effects of the 16thC harbour and later extensions, brought about the denudation of the rocks. The Blockhouse remained until the Memorial was constructed on the ancient walls.
