For convenience, someone was asking about the arrangements under the terrace.
It can be seen clearly here, with a small set of steps down, with old iron railings.
I was never sure of just what was in that locked cabinet at Sir Humphry's feet.

I had the most awful crush on Rosemary Clooney ... I can t say the same of her nephew, though laugh#
 
Sorry to disillusion you, but it held road grit, we used to a lot more snow in those days!!
 
A mystery solved !!! Yes, we had real snow then and we used true grit .... because we had it ....
