Food Ration Book - 3

Meat, Eggs, Fats (butter etc), Cheese, Bacon and Sugar were rationed. Bread was rationed until 1948; Sweets were rationed. You had to have an appointed shop where your food was bought. Without the coupons - no food. The paper used was made using rag (old clothes), as can be seen from the coloured fibres.
Thank you for posting these pictures Treeve, I ve never actually seen a ration book before ::17:::12: very interesting

Mr Hawkey was a jolly fellow, going into the shop was like visiting a friend s house, it was in Stewart s Buildings - he used to sell broken biscuits (no pre-pack stuff then, all loose), I would sometimes go in there and he would say sorry, no broken biscuits .. and then go across and take a handful and break them ... they were cheaper then, by half. That s service, with a smile.

I have just remembered the lady working in there was Mavis Drew (she said mavs droo) she came from Sheffield way (Paul) I think; full of chat and laughs; in the shop the counters were all polished hardwood, and scales were solid brass.

My Aunt Evelyn had a sister called Mavis Drew, fron Sheffield way, I remember her well, always a happy chatty person. Evelyn was married to my mum s brother John [ sometimes called Jack] Rowe from Newlyn.
