Licence

My father had a provisional licence for all groups whilst he was working for TF Hosking (in the building later taken over by Parkers, later to be Branwell's Mill ), agricultural and seed merchant; it was mostly large trucks and tractors. 5 shillings a month. I think he also worked for Dan Wuille and Co, at Long Rock. Massey Furgusson, Bedford 5 ton (O type, I think, long bonnet and round nose grill), a large Guy truck (high fronted, a bit of a bow on the front, with a flat grill), and another something like the 1940s army trucks - had a vertical grill like a jeep, and sounded like a tank inside.
It was a big one, actually there is a picture of Mr Wildman just uploaded on a motorcycle, in the background is a truck something like the one I remember. I was allowed to drive it for ten minutes on a backroad age 12, my second experience behind the wheel; never driven since.

Mr. Wildman’s lorry is similar to the Bedford QL, anything like this was, in my mind, enough to deter anyone from driving. I had the misfortune of being taught to drive in a Royal Navy Bedford 15 cwt around Plymouth. With the crash box , hand signals and getting the steering wheel around I was disillusioned with “ the joys of motoring’’ for life. I had to use a car up until fifteen years ago but have not missed being without one since.
