Meeks, Market Place

The building vacated by Meeks The Furnishers
J W Meek shown in the entrance flooring.
Removal of the Shop Front nameboard shows left J A Floyd, and later Eva and Floyd, next door was W C Symons and Co. The shops were under one ownership in 1880 as Olver and Symons, Drapers. With more careful work and more searching it may be possible to add more information and names; but names before Olver and Symons were given as Coulson (Watchmaker and Draper), Clark (Draper). The date of the building appears to be 1835 or so. I will see what I can do ....
The name of Olver is familiar, being that in 1893 Olver and Sons were cabinet makers, who held the premises at the bottom of Clarence Street, before Alfred Smiths opened in 1912 (under his own name - it was Criddle and Smith of Truro before, from around 1905).

James Floyd was here in around 1881, he was 42 at that time. William and Thomas Coulson date from around 1861 and before, though there is no trace to be seen of the name. I need a better picture as it was quite grey today.
