Alverton Road c1880

Frith Series Postcard, undated, unpostmarked.
The message indicates it was c1880. When I get a chance - I will check and re-date.
Francis Frith and Co Ltd, Reigate.
Buriton House fronted with railing, a cottage where there is now a car park.
Cottages continue across where there is now Penalverne Drive.
Fountain in the forecourt of the Municipal Buildings.
Lovely heavy ironwork railings and gates.
I have the impression that this is a wintery morning and the snow has just fallen.
Old style stone walling, hedges and trees ....
It was a vogue which began in the age when windows (wind eyes) were taxed. It became quite acceptable to have blocked windows for architectural balance as a design feature, rather than as a result of them having been blocked to reduce tax.

ps, since you mention Trevear, I may as well say that I am working on an album with the building included with other buildings connected with our Health history.

I do not know of one on site - but given decent weather - no problems; three cottages were demolished (one was quite large) to allow the road that passeth all inderstanding.
