To be fair, it was very solidly built, I have a 'copyright' picture of the seaward side when the wall and bridges were being built, the timber and jointing was massive. But, as is usual, underestimating the power of wind and sea was just as now, though perhaps more so now. Water is over a foot deeper than in 1817, and still the cry is 'overtopping' rather than dealing with the might itself.
