The great viaduct at Hayle - 2

It was originally designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, friend of John Harvey.
The original was of timber, set on timber piles, built in 1851.
In 1884 it was re-built with the present granite piers, for the double track.
It is 841 feet long and 34 feet high. There are 37 spans.

The only viaduct in England you pass under twice, going in the same direction.
 
Every time I look at it i get more worried about it's structural condition.. look at the last Pier before the road (going toward the shops)...seems to be leaning more and more - can't be safe with such a height ! And if I remember correctly the Pier on from that looks like it's dropped significantly. Has the Railway authority or Highways inspected it of late?
 
I have been informed that it is in constant survey. There are levelling studs all over the bases. It get checked regularly. In fact the subsidence is quite old. Although HRH has been advised that any Royal Train should not continue further than Hayle, it does not appear to be on the 'edge of collapse'. The granite piers are massive and well within the stability third. I have been watching this myself. This happened well back when the harbour was altered for the Harveys. What does need attention is the elevated track base itself, as this is propped and is uneven.
 
Well, I can't share your optimism. If there are monitoring studs around it then they are relatively new---the powers that be must be concerned as well. Thinking back to my early days as a technician in the office of J.H.Slade (Structural Engineers) in Foundry Square some 30 + years ago, I can't think that back then the tilt was anywhere near so pronounced as it is now. I don't recall any of my colleagues ever making any sort of comment about it....but now I would say it has moved rather significantly in the last 3 decades.... or less.
With respect, I do hope the powers that be are not using a rule of thumb (V3 or third rule) to justify it's present stability; It's subsiding on the wrong axis for that, is too high, but moreover has Dynamic/Live loads on top! A nightmare too proove ...and it's still moving I'll be bound.
But if it is still on the move -- so what is their plan??
 
To be frank, I have no faith whatsoever in any department of the present regime; the concern shown for matters of importance in history in Conwall, from personal responses to myself is less than pathetic. In a nutshell, it is totally inadequate, simply filling out reports and making records is not what our gems require; neither do they require burying ... like their failings.
