What a beauty! Can you identify the large building in centre of shot? I think that the shop on the right is what we now know as Bigglestone s. (Bigglestone s was my third favourite ironmongers, after Wilton and Nicholls and Hutchens).
I will try and identify the building soon; I knew of the railway, but to date I had only seen the picture of the old station, first time I have seen a picture showing the railtrack.
The Hayle Railway was built to Stephenson s Standard Guage of 4 feet 8.5 inches; it was opened 23rd December 1837; Hayle Railway Terminus was closed in 1852, the Viaduct having been completed in 1850. Stephenson s became the world standard guage.
I knew of the existence of the Hayle Railway, but this is the first picture I ve seen of its operational days in this part of Hayle. That picture of the station would be interesting.
@Penzancemaid - And she is coming singing soft and low - I am not a Railway Historian, and I have doubts myself as to the 1960s, I can check with my brother, I am about to upload a 1908 OS; More later.
