Carnsew, Hayle - 22; Tide Gates

The Tidal Gates. Designed to allow the tide rise and the sea to enter the pool.
They were closed, and the sluices closed, until the right time, and the sluices opened.
Looking at the gate edges, it appears that they were edged with bands of oiled leather.
The sea-water-facing side of the gates; the pressure on these gates at full pool and low tide must have been immense.
9th May 2009.
I learned a lot about locks and gate when holidaying on the canal. It was fun, interesting, educational and physical. The kids said that it was the best holiday we ve ever had. After a couple of weeks they fully understood the power of water and how it can influence the mightiest of vessels.

Beats barging around .... ::15: The Georgians and Victorians understood the power and use of water more fully than is now understood. They now bow down and worship the great god of oil, with its feet of clay and clouds of poison.
