Carnsew - The Spit, Hayle - 10

The Destroyer, Lelant
8th May 2009
WWI Destroyer

Some of the vessels broken at Lelant were

HMS Aberdeen [1936] in January 1949; HMS Alarm [1911] in May 1921; HMS Chelmer [1904] in June 1920;

HMS Marvel [1915] in May 1921@; HMS Milford [1932] in June 1949; HMS Oak [1912] in 1922;

HMS Plyades [1916] in May 1921; HMS Sunflower [1940] in August 1947;

HMS Woolwich [1912] in July 1926; HMS Bristol [cruiser] in 1921.

The interest, simply, is that one of them, in part, remains at Lelant, north of Dynamite Quay.

She was a WWI destroyer, which is clear.

Some inspection of the hull, and riveting pattern as well as porthole postions, etc, may reveal a type or even the ship itself.

A great deal of checking with service records will be necessary.

In part, a clue will be found in the reason for placing it there, and that may be the contents?

I note the dumping of concrete lighting posts has not helped it to maintain its integrity.

I will make a closer inspection at a later date.

There seems to be a thing about lighting posts, if you walk from Dynamite Quay towards the beach the side of the pathway is also shored up with lighting posts.

What date were they in use and then finished, do you have any idea? Why this site, I thought Bickford-Smith got pulled into ICI? It s a long way to tip a fairy.

Thanks for the lift down today - got some cracking shots of the old metalwork, can now forge ahead with further investigation. Also found an original porthole cover, and some fascinating bricks; quite different from those used on North Quay railway. I wonder if anyone is interested in the old sleepers, the shoes and even granite sleepers on North Quay, fascinating bricks there as well.
